What has the commissioning of the Polder runway meant for the noise pollution at night?

The introduction of the five-runway system has further relieved noise pollution in certain parts of the area surrounding Schiphol. In principle, only two runways are now open at night, the Kaag runway and the Polder runway. Incoming and outbound flight routes from both runways run above areas that are relatively less densely built-up. This leads to a significant reduction in the number of homes that suffer nuisance from air traffic at night. Only in the case of strong westerly or easterly winds, or if the Kaag or Polder runways are undergoing maintenance, must the Buitenveldert or Zwanenburg runways be used for traffic approaching from the south or taking off in a southerly direction.
