Dependent runways: mixed mode

If only one runway is available for both take-offs and landings, the use of this is referred to as ‘mixed mode’ use. The possibility for an aircraft to take off or land then depends directly on other traffic taking off or landing. In such situations, the separation of air traffic is increased. Additional conditions are also imposed here, for matters including visibility and weather conditions and the distance between approaching aircraft.

An example of runway use in mixed mode: the Buitenveldert runway is used both for traffic taking off (green) and for landing traffic (red).
